Conventions Of A Contemporary Music Video

In 1975, 'Bohemian Rhapsody' by Queen was released.

The video lasted 6 minutes in total, creating a new phenomenon which is now known as a music video. This video in particular created a set of conventions which later videos followed. These conventions are;
  • A variety of shots and viewpoints
  • Fast-Cuts and Pacing
  • Dramatic lighting
  • Performance
  • Audience Representation
  • Costume/Appearance
  • Visually appealing aspects to the audience
  • Strong Colours
  • Fantasy Elements
  • Humour Elements
  • Narrative
  • Different Locations
  • Plays on real life
  • Has an enticing hook
  • Ironic Endings
  • Spoof Element
  • Choreography
The length of a music video is normally around 4 minutes and for the duration of 2 minutes of s music video it will contain twice as any camera shots and edits as a feature film.
